Book Review: Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

strange the dreamer

Author: Laini Taylor

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult, High Fantasy

My Rating: 4.5/5

Summary

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way aroundand Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? And if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

Welcome to Weep.

My Thoughts

So where do I start? This duology is definitely a favorite of 2020 and maybe all time too. The worldbuilding, the plot, the characters, everything is so beautifully done.

You ever read a book and realize that you’ll never get to read it for the first time again, this duology definitely hits the top. The awe and wonder of reading this book was so exceptional. I thought I would be intimidated by the writing style but it turned out to be one of the best aspects of this book. The story is so unique and unlike anything I've ever read. Every arc, action, step just falls seamlessly into place.

Ok I have a lot of feelings about Minya. She said some things, did more questionable things. Her hatred and mistrust were understandable I guess but not justifiable.  She put so much energy into protecting her family and feeding her hatred, waiting for vengeance it was really upsetting to read. Sarai is such a strong character, especially in the second book. She's the complete opposite to Minya, trying to keep a grasp on her humanity, kindness and forgiveness, especially after everything she’s been through. Like even though much of her motivation was Lazlo, but it was also so much his humanity, the people of Weep, and not being a monster. Also, all the character povs we get fleshes out the story more.

It had the insta-love trope, but I didn't really mind it. Lazlo and Sarai are really adorable together, build each other up, and are so completely enamored with each other. It was a really beautiful story and I am really glad I finally read it.

Thank you so much for reading. Have you read this book? What did you think about it?
